Back Taxes Held Over Heads of Professional Licensees in Delaware

Taxes, 123rf.com

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials say they will soon start suspending the professional licenses of taxpayers who are delinquent.

Officials noted Tuesday that professional licensees owe more than $10 million in back taxes to the state.

A law enacted this year gives the Division of Revenue authority to suspend professional licenses for people with overdue tax liabilities.

The criteria for suspending professional licenses are the same as those currently used to post names of the top delinquent taxpayers online. Taxpayers must have received a judgment for unpaid taxes, been notified that the state may take action and given 60 days to respond.

Officials say that since first posting the names of the top delinquent taxpayers online in 2007, they have collected more than $10 million from some of the state's worst tax evaders.
