Food Banks Respond to Hunger on Delmarva

Food Bank of Delaware, fbd.org

DELAWARE

MILFORD, Del. (AP) - The Food Bank of Delaware is planning to break ground next week on a $2.6 million expansion project at its Milford branch.

The expanded branch will help the organization meet a growing need in Kent and Sussex counties.

Plans call for the construction of an industrial-sized kitchen to prepare hot meals for children in after-school programs and more space for volunteers. The branch will house the second site of The Culinary School at the Food Bank of Delaware, which trains the unemployed and underemployed for food service industry jobs.

The News Journal of Wilmingtonreports a groundbreaking is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at 1040 Mattind Way.

The group says it helps about one of every four state residents.

MARYLAND

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Maryland Food Bank is holding its 2012 Be A Voice Hunger Action Symposium.

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is scheduled to join more than 400 people at the event on Friday in Baltimore.

Maryland Food Bank's network includes soup kitchens, pantries and shelters, along with state and local officials, private foundations and community-based organizations.
