Tom Kovach Wins GOP Nomination for Delaware's Lone House

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - New Castle County Council President Tom Kovach has easily won the Republican primary for U.S. House.

Kovach is a former state representative. He now goes on to face Democratic incumbent John Carney Jr. in November. With all precincts reporting Tuesday, Kovach had 15,179 votes, compared to 7,988 votes for Rose Izzo.

Izzo is a housewife who courted the tea party vote. This was her second bid for the GOP congressional nomination.

Meanwhile, violent crime was on the minds of many Wilmington Democrats as they voted in a contentious five-way primary for mayor of Delaware's largest city. Bill Montgomery, former chief of staff to three-term incumbent James Baker, and state Rep. Dennis P. Williams, a former Wilmington police officer, were the front-runners.

The other most closely watched race was a four-way primary for New Castle County executive that pitted incumbent Paul Clark against former county executive Tom Gordon, who, like Williams, is also a former police officer.
