The Junior ROTC at Stephen Decatur is alive and well after it was put on the chopping block as part of a budget cutting move that targeted 19 programs across the county that had less than 100 members or 10 percent of the student body.
At the time, Decatur’s program only had 94 cadets.
But, there was an outcry from local residents and some help from Maryland Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin that eventually got the Navy to remove Decatur’s program from the list of program to be eliminated.
Today the Navy has instituted its National Defense Cadet Corp at Decatur which is the same as Junior ROTC but with the funding coming from Worcester County instead of the Navy.
