One of the two reactors at Calvert Cliff’s nuclear power plant has been shut down because of an unplanned insertion of a control rod into the reactor core.
A spokesman at the plant in southern Maryland told the Baltimore Sun that the incident occurred Sunday afternoon resulting in a reduction of power generation.
The rods are used in the reactor to limit the fission taking place among the enriched-uranium fuel rods.
A plant spokesman told the paper that there was no risk to the public but could not say when Unit 1 will be back in operation.
