Plans for a summer camp to prevent violence in Wilmington have picked up speed.
The Reverend Derrick Johnson brought dozens to their feet at a meeting last night calling on the City Council to invest $70-thousand into the project.
Council member Michael Brown quickly backed Johnson’s plan with council member Charles Potter offering up a second.
After the meeting Council member Kevin Kelley said the council has set aside $100-thousand for youth programs and suggested that some of those funds could be used for the summer camp without an official council vote.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that Johnson’s plea followed the death of three people in a shootout in Eden Park.
So far this year 17 people have been killed in Wilmington.
Last year Johnson made a similar proposal to the Delaware Criminal Justice Council but the panel declined to fund it.
