Maryland and Delaware have made the Top Ten list drawn up by the League of American Bicyclists.
Both fulfilled six of the 10 signs of a bike friendly state.
These ranged from a safe passing and vulnerable road user laws and complete streets policy to dedicated state funding for bicycling and a share the road campaign.
Maryland ranked 8th and got praise for establishing the Cycle Maryland program offering up $5 million in grants this spring for new bikeway connections and bike share stations.
Meanwhile, Delaware shot up from 18th to 10th place on the list with special praise for the leadership of Governor Jack Markell and Department of Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt.
The paper reports that in October Markell announced the first State Trails and Pathways Initiative aimed at establishing trails for non-motorized travel and recreation.
