Easton Mail Processing Center Expected to be Saved

The Easton mail processing center will probably be spared from being shutdown as part of the Postal Service plans to close more than 100 facilities throughout the country.

Maryland Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin say they got assurances this week from Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe that the facility will remain open.

Mikulski called this a great victory for Maryland communities that rely on the post office for on-time delivery of lifesaving medications daily newspapers and important business documents.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the Easton facility is currently being studied for consolidation with the Hares Corner facility near New Castle in Delaware.

Donahoe sent a letter yesterday to the Senators saying that the list of processing centers represents a best estimate of which facilities would be needed to meet overnight delivery standards required by Senate legislation.

That bill is could get a vote today but its prospects in the House are uncertain.
