Convicted Killer Shannon Johnson Executed

Condemned Delaware killer Shannon Johnson got his wish and was executed early this morning.

After his conviction for the 2008 murder of Cameron Hamlin,  Johnson said that he did not wish to appeal his death sentence.

Following the execution the victim’s father, Vandrick Hamlin, told a press conference that now it was time for the family to get on with their lives adding – in his words – We can begin healing this morning.”

The Department of Correction said no one from Johnson’s family was present at the execution.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Johnson did not appear to look at the witnesses after the curtains were opened in the death chamber.

The paper said he never raised his head to look around…but stared straight up at the ceiling.

Federal public defenders had tried again to delay the execution on behalf of Johnson’s sister saying that he was mentally incompetent.

But yesterday a Federal appeals court overturned a lower court stay of his sentence.
