Budget Dooms Day Clock To be Unveiled in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland state employees will be unveiling a "Doomsday Clock" to count down when a half a billion in budget cuts will take effect, unless a special session is called to change the budget.

The Maryland State Education Association is planning to show the clock on Wednesday at its Annapolis office.

MSEA says an educator, a member of the police department, librarian a parole and probation officer and others will attend the event.

Unless lawmakers pass revenues in a special session, the cuts will be implemented in July at the start of the next fiscal year.

Republicans say it's a misnomer to call the budget a "Doomsday" one. They say the state should implement the cuts to help put the state's fiscal house in order.
