ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland Senate has passed budget legislation, including an income tax increase.
The Democrat-controlled Senate voted 37-9 for the state's budget Thursday. The Senate voted 33-13 for another bill with cuts and taxes on tobacco and online sales.
A separate measure to raise income taxes has also been approved on a 26-20 vote. The bill has been criticized by Republicans and some Democrats who say the measure will make it harder to attract businesses to the state.
The income tax bill affecting most taxpayers was changed Wednesday night to raise even more money from people making more than $500,000, with a 5.75 percent top bracket that will apply to all of their income.
