Memorial Services Held Today for Civil Rights Leader Rev. Maurice Moyer

 

      Services for long time civil rights leader and community activist the Rev. Maurice J. Moyer are being held today at the Saint Paul UAME Church in Wilmington.

      Moyer was pastor and founder of the Community Presbyterian Church near New Castle.

      He also was the former head of the Wilmington branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

      He died at Christiana Hospital at the age of 93.

      Moyer lived in New Castle with his wife of more than 65 years, Vivian Cleopatra.

      The Wilmington News Journal reports that he was part of the historic 1963 march on Washington where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech and he marched in Selma, Ala.,

       In Delaware he confronted businesses and lawmakers about discriminatory practices throughout the community.

      Delaware flags are flying at half-staff through today in honor of Moyer.
