There was a standoff over plans to add high school grade levels at Newark Charter School at a meeting in Dover yesterday.
Opposition came from staff parents and officials from Christina School District, who say the expansion will cause the district financial and institutional problems.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that the new grades along with expanded enrollment in lower grades would push Charter School enrollment to an estimated 23-hundred students in five years.
It’s estimated that the district could lose as many as 520 students with full implementation.
That, says Christina School board Vice President Frederick Polaski, could mean a loss of as much as $3 million a year, since state and local funding is based on student count.
