The arrest of a Delaware State University professor during a student demonstration last week has drawn concerns about academic freedom and free speech issues.
Professor Jahi Issa assistant professor of history and Africana studies was led away by two campus police officers and later charged with counts ranging from disorderly conduct to resisting arrest and inciting a riot.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that DSU officials say the professor was acting aggressively toward police.
Issa says he was merely there to support the students and remind them of their First Amendment Rights when police approached him.
The protest was organized by students during a meeting of the DSU Board of Trustees to voice their concerns that the historically black institution was losing its identity.
