Camden-Wyoming water authority denies “public body” status

The Camden-Wyoming Sewer and Water Authority filed legal documents arguing this week that it is not a public body as defined by state law, and therefore is not required to make its payroll information public.

The Kent County sewer and water utility has refused to share detailed financial information with the public for the past two years, despite numerous requests from citizens.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that last April, local legislators amended Delaware’s Freedom of Information Act to explicitly define the utility as a public body, but the CWSWA continued to deny public access to their records. In August, the Attorney General’s Office filed suit against the CWSWA on behalf of Wyoming town treasurer Georgette Williams.

Meanwhile, a member of the utility’s board of directors Tracey Green submitted her letter of resignation warns that CWSWA is vulnerable to fraud and needs restructuring to become more transparent.
