The Trump Administration budget would slash the Chesapeake Bay Program from $85 million in 2020 down to $7.3 million.
This is part of its decision to reduce Environmental Protection Agency budget by 27 percent.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the budget statement say it is targeting or eliminating low-value programs as well as “wasteful spending on mandatory programs.”
Most of the Bay Program is devoted to nonprofits as well as state and local governments.
The administration argues that this is part of its effort to achieve a balanced budget in 15 years.
Eastern Shore Republican Congressman Andy Harris issued a statement saying the while he supports the president he also support the Chesapeake Bay Program.
Meanwhile, Republican Governor Larry Hogan said that the administration “recklessly and repeatedly proposes gutting the Chesapeake Bay Program.”
