What do federal funding cuts mean for Delmarva Public Media?

Dear Friends,

Since 1987, Delmarva Public Media has been your trusted source for local news, music, and stories that reflect the spirit of our community. Our stations—WESM, WSCL and WSDL—are among the few truly local voices on the airwaves.

For nearly four decades, federal funding has helped make this work possible. But that's changing.

Congress recently passed a Rescission Package that pulls back funding already appropriated to public broadcasting this year. Stations like ours will feel the effects immediately.

We're disappointed—but not surprised. We've been planning for this scenario for awhile. Federal dollars make up about 15% of our annual budget. So yes, it's a hit—but it's not one we can't manage. We're already making careful cuts, staff realignments, and leaning more into cost-effective, locally produced content.

Now we're focused on the other side of the equation: raising more support from the people who value what we do.

That's you.

With 40,000 weekly listeners, support from local businesses and foundations, and a community that understands the importance of independent media—especially in rural regions—we can weather this.

If Delmarva Public Media matters to you, now is the time to show it. Your support makes all the difference—not just financially, but in sending a clear message that local public radio is worth fighting for.

And here’s something you might not know: NPR doesn’t fund us—we pay them. We purchase NPR programming and infrastructure access so we can bring national news to you alongside our local reporting. So if you want to support the shows you love and ensure local voices stay strong, your gift has to come directly to us.

Thank you for being part of our story. We’re grateful to have you with us.
