Deadline Costs Delaware $20 million for Interchange Completion

mapquest.com

It’s expected to take an extra $20 million to meet the deadline for holiday shoppers to finish construction at I-95 and Delaware Route 1 interchange.

The Delaware Department of Transportation has decided to accelerate the work which means paying overtime to contractors.

All of the ramps are to be open in October with the crews finishing up the major work by Black Friday.

The nearby Christiana Mall depends on the interchange for most of its customers.

Javier Torrijos, a construction group engineer for DelDOT, told the Wilmington News Journal that there is a commitment to affect the Mall as little as possible with the construction.

The project has faced delays caused by problems ranging from too much rain and utility conflicts to poor soil conditions.
