Governor Jack Markell set aside $3.3 million to increase the number of full-time middle school mental health workers to 30.
During his “State of the State” address the Delaware Democrat Markell noted that there were 12 Delaware students who had committed suicide last year.
And, he said, the schools clearly need help in coping with the problems facing these young people.
The administration hopes to put one consultant in each school district.
Lt. Gov. Matt Denn is heading up the effort and says these experts could help these students who might show signs of trouble.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that health experts say the middle schools years are a period of crucial development for children when mental health problems often develop.
