ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman has vetoed a stormwater remediation fee, asking the county council to consider phasing-in fees for some property owners.
Neuman vetoed the bill Thursday, giving the council two months to develop a new plan or override the veto. The council narrowly passed the bill last week.
The Maryland General Assembly passed a bill last year directing 10 jurisdictions, including Anne Arundel County, to establish the fee by July 1 or face fines. Stormwater is a main source of water pollution and the money will pay for efforts to clean up the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The state denied Neuman's request for a delay.
Neuman says she wants the council to revisit the fees for businesses, and look at phasing in the fees for residential properties.
