ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A federal appeals court says a Maryland law state law that seeks to prevent foreign interference in local elections is unconstitutional.
A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the law "reveals a host of First Amendment infirmities."
The panel found that the 2018 law targets political expression and compels certain speech.
A half a dozen newspapers, including The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun filed a lawsuit against provisions in the law.
The Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association argued the statute violates the First Amendment, because it requires newspapers to collect and self-publish information about the sponsors of online political ads.
