Family Life Program Human Sexuality Exercise, Cut from Stephen Decatur Middle School

Stephen Decatur Middle School Website

Administrators at Stephen Decatur Middle School say they’re putting an end to a Family Life and Human Development lesson that required students to model the anatomy of the human reproductive system.

It was taught to 7th grade girls and involved using Play Doh for the male genitals and paper and fabric for the female reproductive system.

The instruction was suspended after parents and students expressed concerns about the program.

Principal Lynne Barton said that although modeling is an effective scientific strategy, it was understood, that it was a sensitive subject for families and students.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that school officials are still investigating the issue but as of last week the teacher involved had not been disciplined.

It was part of The Family Life and Human Development program which is taught to students in the 5th through 7th grades.
