64-year old Tony Christ, an Ocean City businessman, wants voters to decide on whether the resort should bond out millions of dollars to pay for the convention center’s new 12-hundred seat, two-story auditorium.
He makes his home in Falls Church, Virginia but has several business interests and a vacation property in the beach town.
He is circulating two petitions both seeking to overturn either the law in full or the parts that deal with bond-authorization.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that he says he has collected around 200 signatures so far and wants to get 800 by the weekend.
The bond sale was set for November 20th but has been rescheduled for December 5th.
The $12 million bond would also pay for a new roof for the public safety building, a new Beach Patrol headquarters and a municipal effluent disinfection system.
Ocean City Town Council member Dennis Dare says that he believes that Christ doesn’t understand the deal.
The bond will pay for the project and Ocean City’s ½ percent food and beverage tax pays back the bond.
