Salisbury Residents Get Look at Police Body Cameras

Tom Hunt

Salisbury police officers could soon be wearing body cameras.

That was the message at last night's Mayor's Neighborhood Roundtable which drew dozens of local residents.

Police Chief Barbara Duncan noted that the Police Department in Rialto, California saw a dramatic reduction in the number of complaints filed against officers wearing body camera in the year after they were instituted.

In addition, she said that they saw a 60 percent reduction in the use of force.

"They're seeing a lot better interaction between police and community. Issues are resolved faster. Officer safety issues being minimized. And, they're seeing a better product in court." She added, "I anticipate all of those items will be easily replicated right here in Salisbury."

Funding for the program is expected to be announced within the next 35 to 45 days.

The cost is expected to be around $140,000.
