The president of the Salisbury City Council Jake Day and council member Shanie Shields is calling on the Interim City Administrator Tom Stevenson to implement a recommended 8.5 percent pay increase for city employees.
They said the pay hike is needed to make city salaries more competitive with other public employers.
During a council work session, Day said that he wanted to see the pay increase to be considered and implemented quickly.
Stevenson said that he and the mayor are working on how to pay for the nearly $750-thousand pay hike adding that the city cannot rely on a one-time budget gimmick.
