Those looking for striped bass should expect few chances to reel them in this year.
And, possibly in the near future.
The fish have been found to be in trouble with Maryland and Virginia reducing the size of the allowed catch.
In Virginia that has meant a 24 percent reduction for recreational fishermen.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that last October an interstate commission said that there must be an 18 percent reduction in mortality along the coast.
That includes The Chesapeake bay where the species is known to spawn.
The paper reports that the striped bass population is in better condition than in the 1980’s when there was a total ban on fishing for nearly six years.
