Three Mares Donated to Chincoteague Island

The herd on Chincoteague Island just got a little bigger.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company says three mares have been donated to the island.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the ponies were Oreo, Star and Treasure.

They are genetically Chincoteague ponies even though they were born somewhere else.

Denise Bowden with the fire company posted on line that it had been a tough year for the herd.

Some of the ponies have been fighting “swamp cancer” leaving two dead.

Another death occurred when a foal did not survive very long after its birth.
