MD High School Student Shot While Walking Back to School

BURTONSVILLE, Md. (AP) - Police say a student was shot while walking back to high school in Maryland.

Montgomery County police said in a release that a 17-year-old boy walked into a fire station and reported that he had been shot Monday morning. He told police he had left school to purchase something at a nearby convenience store, and was struck while walking back to Paint Branch High School.

The boy suffered a graze wound to his cheek and ear, and was taken to the hospital. In a letter sent to the school community, principal Myriam A. Yarbrough said that the student was "alert and coherent."

Police believe that this wasn't a random event, and that there's no threat to the school. The school did have an increased security presence Monday.
