Shoring Up Smith Island

The Army Corps of Engineers has authorized $6.8 million dollars to help dredge out a channel on Smith Island.

Residents of Rhodes Point told WBOC that it has been a problem for decades.

The dredging should being in November with completion scheduled for April of next year.

Meanwhile, WBOC reports that Somerset County’s Planning Director Gary Pusey said 17 stone structures have been installed to trap into the shoreline.

He says money for the project came from the state’s Sandy Relief fund at a cost of $4.5 million.
