Former Mayor Jim Ireton who now occupies a seat on the Salisbury City Council has decided to make a run for clerk of the court in Wicomico County.
During his announcement on the steps of the Government Office Building he said his decision was about public service.
Ireton sited his administrative experience as mayor overseeing a city government of 400 people with a budget of more than $50 million.
The clerk position is locally elected and oversees civil, criminal and juvenile responsibilities.
Ireton was elected Mayor in 2009 after holding a city council position in the late 1990’s.
He decided not to run for reelection in 2015 with the announcement of Mayor Jake Day’s decision to leave his council position to run for the job.
Instead, Ireton won a seat on the city council in the newly created districts.
Ireton also made a bid for Maryland’s First Congressional District, but failed to capture the Democratic nomination.
