Plans to open up the Virginia Coastline for offshore drilling saw over 30 people protesting at the Willis Wharf on the Eastern Shore Saturday.
The event was called “Hands Across the Sand Eastern Shore” and was part of around 20 events across the county over the weekend.
State Senator Lynwood Lewis told the Salisbury Daily Times that he felt the Eastern Shore Virginians were “ground zero in the battle over offshore drilling.”
He said it would impact tourism, aquaculture and even the military in the region.
The senator also told the crowd that even officials at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility do not like the idea of offshore drilling.
Protesters also signed a petition against the drilling to be presented to Republican Congressman Scott Taylor who is reportedly undecided on the issue.
