Wendy Turner, a second grade teacher at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in Brandywine, has been named Delaware’s 2017 Teacher of the Year.
She stood on the stage for an annual banquet with 19 other top Delaware teachers at Dover Downs.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that she told the gathering that she has been allowed to follow her passion of teaching – a challenge, she added, that she has grown to love.
She said that she was concerned about where the country is headed in these economically troubled time.
She said there were far too few opportunities – especially for those in the African American community.
After 13 years working at an accounting firm Turner decided to become a teacher at the age of 40 adding that she knew that it was the right path.
There was a pool of 9-thousand teachers which was cut down to 20 before she was finally selected.
