Ocean City Resident Dies from Flesh Eating Bacteria

46 year-old Michael Funk has become the victim of flesh eating bacteria.

The Ocean City resident appeared to have gotten the disease while in the Assawoman Bay where he had been four days earlier.

His wife Marcia told the Salisbury Daily Times that his death highlighted the lack of information about the presence of the disease.

The disease can be contacted from eating under-cooked seafood and is found most commonly in warm brackish water with low salinity.

An Ocean City official told the paper that there have been efforts to educate the community but that it has never been part of the resort’s awareness program.

There was an outbreak in 2014 in the Chesapeake Bay and 57 infections in 2013.
