Wilmington Firefighter's Condition Worsens

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Hospital officials say the condition of a Wilmington firefighter injured in a deadly blaze last month has become more serious.

Crozer-Chester Medical Center spokesman Grant Gegwich tells The Wilmington News Journal that Firefighter Ardythe Hope was downgraded to critical condition Wednesday at the Upland, Pennsylvania hospital, where she was taken after the Sept. 24 fire.

She had been listed in critical but stable condition earlier in the week. Gegwich didn't disclose what caused the change.

Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes were killed in the fire after the first floor of the burning rowhome collapsed, trapping them in the basement. Hope and another firefighter, Brad Speakman, were both injured.

Police said 27-year-old Beatrice Fana-Ruiz is charged with arson and murder for intentionally setting the fire.
