Virginia Struggles With Voter Applications from Ex-Felons

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia registrars are facing the challenge of verifying applications from convicted felons registering to vote after Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently restored their voting and other civil rights.

Media outlets report registrars say they've been unable to verify restoration of a felon's voting rights either on the Virginia Election Registration Information System or an online site operated by the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

McAuliffe issued an executive order Friday, restoring the rights of over 200,000 felons to vote, saying the move would help undo Virginia's long history of trying to suppress the black vote.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Virginia Department of Elections Commissioner Edgardo Cortes says the main state voter database will be fully updated by the end of the week to show when a felon's rights had been restored.
