Baltimore Protests, Another Death Questioned

Hundreds of people marched last night to the Baltimore City Hall to protest the death of 25 year old Freddie Gray who suffered a mysterious spinal injury while apparently in police custody.

This week saw a series of marches which have been largely peaceful.

Once incident caught by CNN showed police taking two demonstrators into custody.

Maryland State troopers were on hand to help commuters and traffic congestion.

Governor Larry Hogan said that he had sent 32 troops to the city at the request of the mayor.

Meanwhile, Baltimore City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts met with Gray’s family yesterday to hear their anguish and express his sympathy.

The funeral for Gray is set for Monday morning at Shiloh Baptist Church.

"Nickel Ride"

Freddie Gray Being Taken to Police Van After Arrest

BALTIMORE (AP) - People in Baltimore and other cities accuse police of sometimes giving prisoners an extra-rough "nickel ride" - a reference to amusement rides that once cost a nickel. Now, the safety of people in Baltimore's police vans is under scrutiny because of a past death and a new fatal injury, one that came after police failed to put a seat belt on a passenger.

One of those, Dondi Johnson, died of a fractured spine in 2005 two weeks after he was arrested for urinating in a public street and transported by van. Family lawyer Kerry D. Staton said Johnson was seated alone in the van with his hands cuffed behind him and no seat belt to restrain him.

It is police policy that all arrestees must be buckled in during transport. The policy was updated just nine days before Freddie Gray was fatally injured.
