Obama Stumps for Anthony Brown in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - President Barack Obama campaigned this weekend for Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown's bid to become Maryland's next governor.

The president hosted a rally Sunday in Prince George's County in the Washington suburbs, the nation's wealthiest majority African-American county. Prince George's has a black population of about 65 percent.

If elected, Brown would be Maryland's first black governor.

Voter turnout will be important, and Obama's visit was aimed at firing up voters. Only about 22 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in Maryland's June primary.

Obama campaigned four years ago in Prince George's for Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley, following another low-turnout primary. O'Malley defeated Republican Robert Ehrlich that year with 56 percent of the vote.

Brown is running against Republican Larry Hogan.
