Crisfield City Council Raises Property Taxes, Two-Tiered Plan Turned Down

The Crisfield City Council has approved a 17 cent across the board property tax hike to help fund the police department.

That would bring the rate up to 87 cents per $100 of assessed property value.

And it comes after strong opposition to a two tiered tax of 81 cents for owner occupied buildings and 87 cents for others proposed by Council member Mike Atkins.

Another proposal was voted down called for a 95 cent rate sponsored by Council member Mark Konapelsky.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Mayor Percy Purnell said that the city was facing a $175-thousand drop in tax revenues while getting hit by a $50-thousand increase in insurance rates because of claims filed after hurricane Sandy.
