Lock The Doors: A Proposal for School Safety

One Delaware lawmaker wants the state to pony up $4 million to make sure every door in the state’s public and charter schools lock from both sides.

State Representative Earl Jaques told the Wilmington News Journal he was not sure how or when or how long it would take to pay for the cost of his plan.

The Glasgow Democrat said if a shooting like Sandy Hook that left 2 children dead happened in Delawre everyone would be jumping through hoops to provide the $4 million.

So far, no one has come out to put up the funds to pay for retrofitting over 13-thousand classroom doors at a price tag of $300 apiece.

A spokeswoman for the Governor’s office told the paper that she expects the governor to discuss the issue with lawmakers but noted this year there was a very tight budget.

She added the safety benefit must be weighed against the cost but welcomed discussion on how to further enhance the safety of the state’s school children.
