Shopping Centers Get Approval By Newark City Council

NEWARK, Del. (AP) — The Newark City Council has approved a redevelopment plan for the Newark Shopping Center that includes a 220-unit apartment building.

The council voted 4-3 Monday to allow the plan that local merchants hope will bring more foot traffic to the east end of Main Street. The approval came after the council responded to concerns about density by restricting each of the two-bedroom units to two unrelated people.

Councilmen Jerry Clifton, Luke Chapman and Mark Morehead voted against the project, citing traffic concerns.

The council also approved a plan to build 276 housing units on two sides of the Suburban Plaza Shopping Center.
