A five member working group of Delaware’s Sentencing Accountability Commission may be looking at increasing punishment for violent offenders.
The commission is urging judges to impose the least-restrictive and most-cost effective punishment so that prison beds can be left for the violent prone criminal.
A recent investigation by the Wilmington News Journal found that the guidelines are often treated as mandates by judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys.
And, that, the paper says, has led to short prison terms or probation for many chronic criminals who are violent offenders.
