On today's  program we talk about mystery writers Dashiell Hammett,  Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald with Karen Huston Karydes. In her recently published book Hard-Boiled Anxiety, Karen looks at the life and work of Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald through a Freudian framework. Macdonald is not too difficult, he tells us that his work is a reflection of his personal life and the Freudian analysis that he went through, but Hammett and Chandler? Have they written themselves into their mysteries without intending to?
