Welcome to Salisbury University’s Cultural Calendar Highlights for the week of February 22.
SU’s annual African American History Month celebration concludes with three virtual arts events. On Wednesday, February 24, the University joins the National African American Read-In, hosting its annual African American Poetry Read-In. Participants are invited to read their original poems. Campus community members also may select poems to read from books available through SU Libraries.
On Thursday, February 25, SU hosts facilitated, small-group discussions of Angie Thomas’ award-winning young adult novel The Hate U Give and its film adaptation. The book and movie tell the story of a high school student caught between her African American neighborhood and the elite environment of her mostly Caucasian prep school while confronting racism, police violence and tensions in becoming a community activist.
The series culminates with the presentation “Celebrating Women’s Voices: Readings by Afro-Colombian Poets.” This two-part event explores a broader Black identity in the Americas through readings by SU and Roanoke College students in Spanish while wearing traditional Colombian dress, accompanied by traditional music. The second installment is scheduled Wednesday, March 31.
