CAMBRIDGE, Md. (AP) - Organizers say they have raised 90 percent of the money needed for construction of a replica of the Choptank River lighthouse, which they hope to have ready by September.
The project is expected to cost more than $600,000 and supporters say more than two-thirds has been raised through private donations.
The new lighthouse is being built at the Cambridge City Marina,where it will be accessible to the public. The original 42-foot wide lighthouse stood for more than 80 years at the junction of the Choptank and Tred Avon rivers and was torn down by the Coast Guard in 1964.
Organizers say the lighthouse will serve as the dockmaster's office, an information center and a symbol of Cambridge's revitalization.
